Majnu ka Tilla (MT) is a Tibetan refugee colony in Delhi. It’s a nice spot to stay if you’re trying to get away from the more touristy parts of Delhi, such as Paharganj. One of the things that used to make MT a less attractive option, however, was the lack of reliable internet access…
A couple of years ago when we last stayed here, we discovered an internet cafe with fairly good wireless access.

Coffee House in Majnu ka Tilla, Delhi
We spent entire days camped out in Coffee House, working online and eating waffles with ice cream. Unfortunately, the internet wasn’t all that reliable, and eventually it died completely and we had to trek across town to find another alternative.
This year when we arrived, we discovered a happy development. Just opposite from Coffee House, some friendly dudes have set up an internet cafe.

The internet cafe across from Coffee House
You can either use their computers (not recommended if you’re working on anything sensitive) or get the wireless password from them and then head back to Coffee House to enjoy the comfy seats and snacks.
The improved internet situation more than made up for the fact that Coffee House no longer serves waffles with ice cream.
A few useful things to know:
- You’ll need your passport to use the internet (whether you use their computers or your own). The owners will photocopy your passport and give you a card. Hang onto the card or remember the 3 digit number they give you, and you won’t need to repeat this process next time.
- The cost is currently 30 rupees per hour. Pay after you’re done. The clock starts ticking as soon as you get the password.
- Coffee House does have outlets, so you can plug your laptop in. You may need an adaptor, which you can pick up in MT for about 45 rupees.
The second place you can get internet access in Majnu ka Tilla is Himalayan House.
This guesthouse is my new favorite place to stay – freshly-painted rooms, yummy food… and free wireless internet! Just ask at the front desk for the password.
I was able to get a great connection from the second floor with my MacBook; Rinch, not so great with his PC. But you can always sit downstairs in the lobby, or work in the hotel restaurant, Hi Himalayan.
Here’s the addy:
Himalayan House
House No. 26, New Tibetan Camp, New Aruna Nagar, Majnu ka Tilla, Delhi-110054
E-mail: himalayanhouse@hotmail.com
Tel: +91 11 23813488, +91 1123813988
Fax: +91 11 23814715
We also got a wireless signal from the guesthouse next door, Yak House. Not as strong though, and the rooms are a bit moldy, so you’re better off with Himalayan if you can get a room. We pay 450 rupees per night, but this will vary depending on the floor and the season.
